WSK Final Cup, Round 2 at Franciacorta
Well, folks, my 2023 season has drawn to a close. It’s been a really long by enjoyable first season racing in OKJ. I’ll write a season recap in the coming few weeks.
My final race was the second round of the WSK Final Cup at Franciacorta in Italy. A track we’ve raced at a few times this year.
Through practice, I knew I definitely had the speed to run at the front. My Parolin chassis and GFR Engine was on point!
However, qualifying didn’t turn out as planned. I was on what turned out to be my final push lap. I had a perfect gap, but a driver ahead overtook another driver, pushing them onto the marbles; they dropped back and impeded me. I crossed the line just as the clock turned zero. I thought I’d made it, so I put in a flying lap, which would have been good enough for a pole in my group. Sadly, the lap didn’t count, and I was P27 overall and in Group B.
In my first heat, Heat B-D I started P11, I quickly got to P9, but I got roughed up, and I fell back to P16. I climbed back to a disappointing P12.
Heat A-B was tough; I started P12 but fell to P15 at the start. I pushed hard and worked my way to P10; however, I received a bumper penalty and was classified P18.
In Heat B-E, I had a great start from the pole side and made my way from P11 to P7 on the first lap. I made my way to P4, but a driver behind punted me wide on the last lap, and I lost 3 places. I finished P7.
In my final heat, Heat B-C, I had a good start on the pole side, getting to P8, and I progressively worked my way through to P3. I had a really good pace. It was a great way to end my qualifying heats.
By the end of the qualifying heats, I was P16 out of 85 drivers.
Sunday started off very cold. I was in Pre-final B, where I started P8. I had a great start; I slotted into a gap on the pole side in P7. I made my way to P5 and spent the race either trying to catch the top 5 or battling with those behind and falling back. On the last lap, I was in P6, I had the inside and a driver tried to squeeze me and pushed me off the track. I kept going but lost lots of places and finished P10.
I started the final in P18. A tough start saw me fall to P21, and I drove to P17, but was classified P14.
It wasn’t the best race to end the season with, but I had some good drives. Now I get to take some time off and reset, ready for 2024.
Thank you, @parolinracing @travisanuttoracing @anellimirco, Roberto Toninelli @gfrengines, for all your help this year!
